In-depth explanation of Mulliken Electronegativity

The Mulliken electronegativity is defined as the average of an atom's first ionisation energy and its electron affinity, chi = (IE + EA) / 2. This definition links electronegativity directly to two measurable atomic properties. Because it is based on energies, it is defined on an absolute scale, although its values must be converted before they can be compared with Pauling values. It is useful in theoretical chemistry and in quantitative bonding models. An atom with high ionisation energy and a large electron affinity is strongly electronegative.

Going deeper: Mulliken Electronegativity

Key ideas: chi = (IE + EA) / 2 using absolute values in the same units, eV or kJ per mol; it converts to the Pauling scale by chi_Pauling = 0.336 x (chi_Mulliken in eV - 0.615). Elements with both high IE and high EA are very electronegative.

Common mistakes and connections: Students use EA with the wrong sign: use the energy released on gaining an electron as a positive number, so a more exothermic attachment raises chi. Also the choice of valence state affects the result. The scale is directly linked to measurable atomic properties, linking IE and EA with bonding.

Visualization of Mulliken Electronegativity

Mulliken's average of ionization energy and electron affinity gives the same ordering as Pauling: sodium lowest, fluorine highest at 10.4 eV. The interactive lesson shows this as a live animation or chart.

Worked example and use case

For fluorine, IE of about 1681 kJ/mol and EA of about 328 kJ/mol give chi = (1681 + 328) / 2, or about 1005 kJ/mol, which is then converted to the Pauling-equivalent scale.
