The s-block comprises groups 1 and 2, the alkali metals and alkaline earth metals, whose last electron enters an s orbital. Their configurations are ns1 for group 1 and ns2 for group 2. They are highly electropositive metals that form ionic compounds with +1 and +2 ions respectively. Their reactivity increases down each group because the outer electron is more easily lost. Hydrogen and helium are also placed in the s-block, although their chemistry is distinctive.
Key ideas: Groups 1 and 2 plus H and He, valence configuration ns1 or ns2. Alkali metals form M+ and alkaline earths M2+. They are soft, reactive and low in electronegativity, with reactivity increasing down group (Li to Cs) for alkali metals and also for Group 2 with water. Flame colors: Li red, Na yellow, K lilac, Ca brick red, Ba green.
Common mistakes and connections: Students think all s-block elements are metals (H is a nonmetal and He is a noble gas) or that reactivity with water decreases down a group, which is false. Be differs from its group and behaves like aluminium (diagonal relationship). Storage under oil is needed for Na and K, not for Be and Mg.
First ionisation energy falls down group 1 from lithium to cesium, so the s-block alkali metals become more reactive down the group. The interactive lesson shows this as a live animation or chart.
Magnesium, a group 2 metal, burns brightly in air to form magnesium oxide, MgO.
