In-depth explanation of Microplastics

Microplastics are plastic particles smaller than 5 mm, arising either as primary microbeads and fibres or as secondary fragments from the weathering of larger items. They spread through oceans, rivers, soils and the atmosphere, and are ingested by marine organisms, moving through food chains. Their surfaces can adsorb hydrophobic pollutants, which may carry toxins into organisms. Microplastics have been detected in human tissues, and their long-term health effects are still under study. Reducing emissions from textiles, tyres and packaging is a key control strategy.

Going deeper: Microplastics

Key ideas: Plastic particles below 5 mm; nanoplastics below 1 micrometer. Primary ones are made small (microbeads, pellets), secondary ones come from fragmentation by UV, abrasion and wave action, plus fibers from synthetic textile washing. They adsorb persistent organic pollutants and carry additives, and enter food chains and human blood and tissue.

Common mistakes and connections: Mistake: assuming plastics biodegrade; they fragment but persist for decades to centuries. Density determines whether they float (PE, PP) or sink (PVC, PET). Effects on health are still being studied. Links to bioaccumulation, water pollution and polymer weathering.

Visualization of Microplastics

Size on a log scale. Microplastics span about a micrometre to 5 mm, small enough to enter food chains, and smaller nanoplastics may enter cells. The interactive lesson shows this as a live animation or chart.

Worked example and use case

Washing synthetic clothing releases tiny fibres that pass through wastewater treatment into rivers.
