In-depth explanation of Renewable Energy Chemistry

Renewable energy technologies such as solar photovoltaics, wind, hydropower and geothermal energy generate electricity without burning fossil fuels. Chemistry is central to them: semiconductors convert light, electrochemical cells store energy in batteries, electrolysers produce hydrogen, and catalysts enable the synthesis of fuels and fertilisers. Lithium-ion batteries use cathode materials such as lithium cobalt oxide or nickel-manganese-cobalt oxides with graphite anodes. Sustainable fuels such as hydrogen, ammonia and synthetic hydrocarbons can store renewable electricity for transport and industry. Mineral supply chains and recycling of materials are essential to scale these technologies.

Going deeper: Renewable Energy Chemistry

Key ideas: Chemistry supports solar cells, batteries, fuel cells, biofuels and hydrogen. Bioethanol from fermentation, biodiesel from transesterification of triglycerides with methanol, lithium-ion cells (LiCoO2 cathode, graphite anode, about 3.7 V) for storage. Energy density comparisons: gasoline about 46 MJ per kg, lithium-ion about 0.7 to 0.9 MJ per kg.

Common mistakes and connections: Mistake: assuming renewable means zero emissions; manufacture, mining and land use have footprints, and biofuels compete with food. Intermittency makes storage a key chemistry challenge. Links to electrochemistry, green hydrogen and photosynthesis.

Visualization of Renewable Energy Chemistry

Approximate specific energy of rechargeable batteries. Lithium-ion chemistry stores much more energy per kilogram, which is key for electric vehicles. The interactive lesson shows this as a live animation or chart.

Worked example and use case

Lithium and cobalt are key raw materials for the batteries in electric vehicles and grid storage.
