In-depth explanation of Organometallic Compounds

Organometallic compounds contain at least one direct bond between a metal and a carbon atom of an organic group. Sigma-bonded alkyls and aryls, such as Grignard reagents RMgX, have the carbon attached directly to the metal. Pi-bonded complexes, such as ferrocene and Zeise's salt, bind unsaturated molecules through their pi electrons. Metal carbonyls form a third class. The metal-carbon bond is often polarized, so the carbon is nucleophilic and useful in organic synthesis. Many of these compounds are also important catalysts.

Going deeper: Organometallic Compounds

Key ideas: Contain at least one metal-carbon bond. Classes: ionic (NaC2H5-type, group 1), sigma bonded (Grignard RMgX, R2Zn, R4Pb), and pi bonded (ferrocene, Zeise salt). Grignard reagents: R-X + Mg in dry ether gives RMgX, which adds to carbonyls and CO2. Count electrons by the neutral or ionic method; ligand hapticity eta-n shows how many carbons bind. Very sensitive to moisture and air for the main group alkyls.

Common mistakes and connections: Students call metal carbonates or cyanides organometallic; they must contain M-C bonds from organic groups, though metal carbonyls are accepted. Using water or protic solvents destroys Grignard reagents: RMgX + H2O gives RH. Bond polarity is the origin of nucleophilic carbon. Links to metal carbonyls, catalysis and organic synthesis.

Visualization of Organometallic Compounds

A methyl group like in CH3MgBr is a tetrahedral carbon; the polar metal-carbon bond makes that carbon a strong nucleophile. The interactive lesson shows this as a live animation or chart.

Worked example and use case

Methylmagnesium bromide, CH3MgBr, is a Grignard reagent that adds a methyl group to a carbonyl compound.
