In-depth explanation of Types of Chemical Reactions

Chemical reactions fall into a few main types that help predict products. In a combination reaction, two or more substances join to form one product. A decomposition reaction breaks one compound into simpler substances, often on heating. In single displacement, one element replaces another in a compound, as when zinc displaces copper from solution. In double displacement, two ionic compounds exchange partners, often forming a precipitate, a gas or water. Combustion is rapid reaction with oxygen that releases heat and light.

Going deeper: Types of Chemical Reactions

Key ideas: Main types: combination, decomposition, single displacement, double displacement, combustion, acid-base neutralization, redox. Recognition rules: A + B gives AB is synthesis; AB gives A + B decomposition; A + BC gives AC + B displacement; AB + CD gives AD + CB metathesis. Metathesis proceeds if it forms a precipitate, gas or weak electrolyte (water). Redox if any oxidation numbers change. Always balance by atom and charge conservation, and label states (s, l, g, aq).

Common mistakes and connections: Students think every reaction fits one category, but many overlap, e.g. combustion and combination are redox. Not all displacement reactions occur; check the activity series. Double displacement is not redox, since oxidation numbers do not change. Worked example and use case

Ammonium dichromate decomposes on heating to give nitrogen, water and chromium(III) oxide, a decomposition reaction.
