In-depth explanation of Cycloalkanes

Cycloalkanes are saturated hydrocarbons whose carbon atoms form a closed ring, with the general formula CnH2n. Small rings such as cyclopropane and cyclobutane have angles far from the tetrahedral 109.5 degrees, producing angle strain, and eclipsing interactions add torsional strain. Cyclohexane avoids nearly all strain by adopting the chair conformation, in which all bond angles are close to 109.5 degrees and all hydrogens are staggered. Apart from the ring opening of strained small rings, cycloalkanes react much like open-chain alkanes, by substitution and combustion.

Going deeper: Cycloalkanes

Key ideas: General formula CnH2n. Rings of 3 and 4 carbons are strained; cyclopentane puckers slightly, and cyclohexane in the chair form is essentially strain-free. Small rings undergo ring-opening addition (cyclopropane with Br2 or HBr) while larger rings behave like alkanes with substitution. Substituted rings show cis-trans isomerism because ring rotation is restricted.

Common mistakes and connections: A common mistake is assuming rings are flat polygons and using Baeyer angles for cyclohexane, which wrongly predicts strain. Students also forget that cycloalkanes are isomers of alkenes with the same formula. Connects to ring strain, chair conformations and stereochemistry in rings.

Visualization of Cycloalkanes

Total ring strain of cycloalkanes in kJ/mol: cyclopropane and cyclobutane are highly strained, while chair cyclohexane is essentially strain-free. The interactive lesson shows this as a live animation or chart.

Worked example and use case

Cyclohexane is widely used as an industrial solvent and as a raw material for making nylon intermediates.
