In-depth explanation of Diels-Alder Reaction

The Diels-Alder reaction is a concerted [4+2] cycloaddition in which a conjugated diene, which must adopt the s-cis conformation, reacts with a dienophile, usually an electron-poor alkene, to form a new six-membered ring containing a cyclohexene. Two new carbon-carbon sigma bonds form in one step through a cyclic transition state, so the reaction is stereospecific. Electron-withdrawing groups on the dienophile speed the reaction. The endo product is often favoured kinetically because of secondary orbital interactions in the transition state.

Going deeper: Diels-Alder Reaction

Key ideas: A [4+2] cycloaddition between a conjugated diene (in s-cis conformation) and a dienophile giving a cyclohexene. Rate increases with electron-rich diene and electron-poor dienophile (maleic anhydride, acrolein). It is concerted and suprafacial, so stereochemistry is retained: cis dienophile gives cis substituents. Endo product dominates kinetically (Alder endo rule). Forms two sigma bonds from three pi bonds.

Common mistakes and connections: Students use s-trans dienes or non-conjugated dienes, which do not react. Another error is predicting regiochemistry incorrectly; ortho or para products dominate for 1-substituted and 2-substituted dienes. Links to pericyclic rules, orbital symmetry and ring synthesis.

Visualization of Diels-Alder Reaction

A single concerted step forms two C-C sigma bonds from pi bonds; the product is much lower in energy than the diene plus dienophile. The interactive lesson shows this as a live animation or chart.

Worked example and use case

1,3-Butadiene reacts with maleic anhydride to give a cyclohexene bearing a fused anhydride ring.
