In-depth explanation of Polymers Overview

A polymer is a very large molecule built from many repeating units called monomers joined by covalent bonds. Polymers occur naturally, as in cellulose, proteins and natural rubber, and they can be made synthetically, as in nylon, PVC and polystyrene. Their physical properties depend on chain length, branching, crosslinking and the degree of crystallinity, which together determine whether a polymer is rigid, flexible, elastic or brittle. Because of their size, polymers have high molar masses and are usually described by average values.

Going deeper: Polymers Overview

Key ideas: Polymers are macromolecules built from repeat units; classify by origin (natural, synthetic), structure (linear, branched, cross-linked), mechanism (addition, condensation) and behaviour (thermoplastic softens on heating, thermosetting does not, elastomers stretch). Degree of polymerisation n times repeat-unit mass gives molar mass. Polydispersity index (Mw over Mn) is always at least 1 and measures chain length spread.

Common mistakes and connections: Students think a polymer has a single molar mass, when only an average exists. Another error is confusing thermosetting with thermoplastics: Bakelite is thermosetting (heavily cross-linked) while polyethylene is thermoplastic. Links to addition and condensation polymers, rubber and biopolymers such as proteins and nucleic acids.

Visualization of Polymers Overview

A polymer is a long chain of repeating units; polyethylene, built from thousands of CH2CH2 monomers, is the simplest example. The interactive lesson shows this as a live animation or chart.

Worked example and use case

A polyethylene chain can contain thousands of repeating CH2 units joined end to end.
