In-depth explanation of Mole Fraction

Mole fraction is the ratio of the number of moles of one component to the total number of moles in a mixture, x_i = n_i / n_total. The mole fractions of all components sum to 1, and the quantity is dimensionless, so it does not depend on the units used. Because it is based on counts of particles rather than on mass or volume, it does not change with temperature when the amounts are fixed. Mole fraction links Dalton's law and Raoult's law, since it gives the partial pressure of a gas or solvent component. It is a convenient way to describe any gas or liquid mixture.

Going deeper: Mole Fraction

Key ideas: Calculate x_i = n_i divided by the sum of all moles. Combine with total pressure to get partial pressure, and with vapour pressure of pure liquid for Raoult's law. For a two-component system x_A + x_B = 1, so only one needs computing. For solutions, solvent mole fraction is moles solvent over moles solvent plus solute.

Common mistakes and connections: Common errors are using mass or volume instead of moles, and confusing mole fraction with molality or molarity. For solutions, do not divide solute moles by solvent moles only; that gives a mole ratio, not a fraction. Mole fraction is dimensionless and temperature independent, unlike molarity. Used heavily in Dalton's law, Raoult's law and colligative property work.

Visualization of Mole Fraction

Mole fractions x_i = n_i / n_total always sum to 1, and each gas's partial pressure equals x_i times the total pressure. The interactive lesson shows this as a live animation or chart.

Worked example and use case

A mixture of 1 mol of nitrogen and 3 mol of oxygen has an oxygen mole fraction of 3/4, or 0.75.
