In-depth explanation of Tetrahedral and Octahedral Voids

Voids are the gaps between spheres in close-packed structures, and two types are important. Octahedral voids are surrounded by six spheres, while tetrahedral voids are surrounded by four. In a close-packed structure with N spheres there are N octahedral voids and 2N tetrahedral voids. Smaller ions can occupy these voids in ionic crystals, and the ratio of ionic radii helps determine which void is filled. Filling the voids determines many ionic crystal structures, such as the rock salt and zinc blende arrangements.

Going deeper: Tetrahedral and Octahedral Voids

Key ideas: Radius ratios: tetrahedral hole accepts r/R up to 0.225 to 0.414 and octahedral 0.414 to 0.732. Void count in close packing is N octahedral and 2N tetrahedral. Examples: NaCl has Cl in fcc with Na in all octahedral; zinc blende has S in fcc with Zn in half the tetrahedral; CaF2 has Ca in fcc and F in all tetrahedral voids.

Common mistakes and connections: Students swap the numbers 2N and N, or forget the ratios are limits for geometry stability. Another mistake is thinking the void sizes are equal; octahedral voids are larger than tetrahedral. Voids in cubic cells: tetrahedral at body diagonal positions and octahedral at cell centre and edge centres. Links to radius ratio rules and ionic structures.

Visualization of Tetrahedral and Octahedral Voids

A close-packed lattice has one octahedral void and two tetrahedral voids per atom; small ions occupy these gaps in ionic crystals. The interactive lesson shows this as a live animation or chart.

Worked example and use case

In rock salt (NaCl), the chloride ions form a face-centred cubic array and the sodium ions occupy all of the octahedral voids.
