In-depth explanation of Unit Cell

A unit cell is the smallest portion of a crystal lattice that, when repeated by translation in three dimensions, generates the entire crystal. It is described by three edge lengths a, b and c and three angles alpha, beta and gamma between them. The unit cell is chosen so that it shows the full symmetry of the lattice, and the atoms in it are counted using fractional contributions. An atom at a corner is shared by eight cells and contributes 1/8, an atom on an edge is shared by four and contributes 1/4, and an atom on a face contributes 1/2. Adding these contributions gives the number of atoms per unit cell, which is needed to calculate density.

Going deeper: Unit Cell

Key ideas: Key counts: corner 1/8, edge 1/4, face 1/2, body 1. Density = Z M / (NA a^3), with Z atoms per cell, M molar mass in g/mol, a in cm. For example, copper with Z = 4, M = 63.5 and a = 361 pm gives about 8.9 g/cm3. Seven crystal systems and fourteen Bravais lattices derive from cell shapes.

Common mistakes and connections: Students forget to convert pm to cm (1 pm = 10^-10 cm) and get density wrong by large factors. Another error is counting all corner atoms as whole. A unit cell is not unique; the primitive cell has the smallest volume. Links to packing efficiency, X-ray diffraction and ionic crystal formulas.

Visualization of Unit Cell

A unit cell is the smallest repeating block of a crystal; translating it in 3D rebuilds the whole lattice, defined by edge lengths and angles. The interactive lesson shows this as a live animation or chart.

Worked example and use case

In a face-centred cubic cell there are 8 corners × 1/8 + 6 faces × 1/2 = 4 atoms per cell.
