In-depth explanation of Irreversible Process

An irreversible process is any real process that proceeds at a finite rate and cannot be retraced without leaving a permanent change in the system or surroundings. Typical sources of irreversibility include friction, turbulent mixing, electrical resistance and heat flow across a finite temperature difference. Irreversible processes always generate entropy, so the total entropy of the universe increases during them. For the same change in state, an irreversible expansion yields less work than the reversible path, and an irreversible compression requires more work. Recognizing irreversibility is essential for estimating the efficiency of real engines and devices.

Going deeper: Irreversible Process

Key ideas: Irreversible processes create entropy, so delta S universe is positive. They deliver less work than reversible ones, and the lost work appears as extra heat. Examples include heat flow across finite temperature gaps, mixing, expansion against low pressure and friction.

Common mistakes and connections: Students often compute work from the final gas pressure instead of the external pressure. Remember that delta S of the system for the same change of state is identical for both paths, because it is a state function, though the surroundings differ. This topic underlies the second law.

Visualization of Irreversible Process

Expanding against a fixed external pressure of 2 atm does far less work than the reversible path above it; the lost work appears as extra entropy. The interactive lesson shows this as a live animation or chart.

Worked example and use case

A gas released through a valve into an evacuated chamber expands irreversibly and does no work on the surroundings.
