In-depth explanation of End Point

The end point is the point at which a visible change, usually a color change of an indicator, signals that the titration should be stopped. A good indicator makes the end point and the equivalence point very close, so the difference between them, called the titration error, is small. The end point is therefore an experimental observation, while the equivalence point is a theoretical quantity. Choosing an indicator whose transition range lies near the expected equivalence pH minimizes this error. Careful observation of the color change is essential for reliable results.

Going deeper: End Point

Key ideas: The end point is the observed signal, usually an indicator color change, that the titration is complete. Good indicator choice places it within a few hundredths of a mL of the equivalence point. Titration error equals the volume difference between them. A colorimetric end point is visible when the indicator changes over pH = pKa plus or minus 1.

Common mistakes and connections: Mixing up end point and equivalence point is the main mistake: one is experimental, the other theoretical. Overshooting causes a permanent strong color. Some methods use a pH meter or conductivity to detect the end point. Relates to indicator ranges and Henderson-Hasselbalch.

Visualization of End Point

End point is the visible color change; each indicator switches over about two pH units, so the end point should fall near the equivalence pH. The interactive lesson shows this as a live animation or chart.

Worked example and use case

Phenolphthalein turns pink at a pH of about 8.2 to 10, so it suits titrations whose equivalence point is basic.
