In the titration of a strong acid with a strong base, the pH before equivalence is set by the excess strong acid remaining, and after equivalence by the excess strong base. At the equivalence point the solution contains only sodium chloride and water, so the pH is exactly 7 at 25 C. The steep vertical section of the curve extends over several pH units, which allows many indicators to be used. Because both reactants are fully dissociated, the calculations are straightforward and depend only on the amounts added. This titration is the standard introduction to acid-base titration.
Key ideas: Before equivalence, pH comes from excess H+: moles left divided by total volume. At equivalence, pH is exactly 7.00 (25 C). Afterwards use excess OH-. For 25.0 mL of 0.100 M HCl with 0.100 M NaOH, equivalence needs 25.0 mL; the pH jumps from about 3 to 11 within roughly 0.1 mL.
Common mistakes and connections: Mistakes: forgetting to add the titrant volume to the total when computing concentration, and using the original concentration after mixing. The steep jump is why many indicators (methyl orange to phenolphthalein) work. Conductivity falls then rises, with a minimum at equivalence.
0.100 M HCl titrated with 0.100 M NaOH: pH is exactly 7 at equivalence and the vertical section spans about pH 3 to 11, so many indicators work. The interactive lesson shows this as a live animation or chart.
Titrating 0.100 M HCl with 0.100 M NaOH gives pH 7 at the equivalence point.
