In-depth explanation of Alkaloids

Alkaloids are basic, nitrogen-containing natural products that come mainly from plants, and they have marked physiological effects on humans and animals. Their nitrogen is usually part of a heterocyclic ring, and the basic amine allows them to be extracted from plant material as water-soluble salts. Many alkaloids are chiral, and their biological activity often depends strongly on configuration. Well-known examples include caffeine, nicotine, morphine, quinine and atropine.

Going deeper: Alkaloids

Key ideas: Basic nitrogen-containing natural products, mostly from plants, usually with heterocyclic rings and strong physiological activity. Examples: morphine, codeine, quinine, caffeine, nicotine, atropine, cocaine. Isolated by acid extraction as water-soluble salts then basification and organic extraction. Detected by precipitating with Mayer or Dragendorff reagents. Many are chiral and single enantiomer.

Common mistakes and connections: Students assume all natural nitrogen compounds are alkaloids; amino acids and nucleotides are not. Another error is ignoring that toxicity and medicinal action are both dose dependent. Links to amines, heterocycles, pharmaceuticals and asymmetric synthesis.

Visualization of Alkaloids

Common alkaloids are basic nitrogen natural products of modest molar mass from plants with strong physiological effects. The interactive lesson shows this as a live animation or chart.

Worked example and use case

Quinine, an alkaloid from cinchona bark, has long been used to treat malaria.
