In-depth explanation of Titration Curve

A titration curve is a graph of pH against the volume of titrant added, showing how acidity changes throughout the reaction. A strong acid and strong base curve begins low, stays nearly flat, rises steeply through the equivalence point and then flattens at high pH. A weak acid curve shows a buffer region before equivalence where pH changes slowly, and at half the equivalence volume the pH equals pKa. The size and position of the steep jump determine which indicators are suitable. Reading the curve allows the equivalence point and the acid constant to be found directly.

Going deeper: Titration Curve

Key ideas: A plot of pH against titrant volume. Features: initial pH from the analyte, a buffer region (flat) before equivalence for weak species, a steep jump at equivalence, and a plateau afterwards set by excess titrant. The half-equivalence point gives pKa directly, and the jump height shrinks when solutions are dilute or the acid is very weak.

Common mistakes and connections: Students expect symmetrical curves for all titrations; only strong-strong is symmetric about pH 7. Another error is placing the equivalence point at the middle of the plateau rather than the inflection. Polyprotic acids show one jump per resolvable proton. Used to determine Ka and choose indicators.

Visualization of Titration Curve

A pH-versus-volume curve shows a base being titrated with acid: a flat high-pH region, a steep fall through equivalence and then a low plateau. The interactive lesson shows this as a live animation or chart.

Worked example and use case

The steep jump in a strong acid-strong base titration typically spans from about pH 3 to pH 11 around the equivalence point.
